Tips for English to Ukrainian translation

Ukrainian uses a Cyrillic alphabet with 33 letters, including unique characters not found in Russian: і (ee), ї (yee), є (yeh), and ґ (soft g). Russian Cyrillic letters ы, э, and ъ do not exist in Ukrainian. These differences help identify which language a Cyrillic text is written in.

Ukrainian has seven grammatical cases, similar to Polish and Czech. Nouns, adjectives, and pronouns change endings based on their role. The vocative case (used for direct address) is actively used in Ukrainian, unlike in Russian where it has mostly disappeared.

Ukrainian word order is flexible because case endings carry grammatical information. SVO is the default, but rearrangement for emphasis is common. The translator produces standard English SVO regardless of Ukrainian word arrangement.

Ukrainian has been influenced by Polish (due to centuries of political union), but its core vocabulary and grammar are East Slavic, closely related to Russian and Belarusian. Despite this relationship, Ukrainian and Russian are not mutually intelligible without study.

About the Ukrainian language

Ukrainian is an East Slavic language closely related to Russian and Belarusian. It has been the official language of Ukraine since independence in 1991 and has experienced significant revival and standardization since then. The language has a literary tradition dating back to the 11th century, with modern Ukrainian literature flowering in the 19th century through poets like Taras Shevchenko.

Ukraine has about 44 million people and is the largest country entirely within Europe by area. The Ukrainian diaspora is significant, with over 1.5 million people of Ukrainian descent in Canada alone. Ukrainian culture includes a rich tradition of folk music, embroidery (vyshyvanka), Easter egg painting (pysanky), and a growing contemporary arts scene.
