Tips for English to Slovak translation
Slovak and Czech are very closely related. Speakers of both languages can understand each other with minimal difficulty, similar to the relationship between Spanish and Portuguese. However, they are officially separate languages with distinct standards.
Slovak has six grammatical cases (one fewer than Czech). Nouns, adjectives, and pronouns change endings based on grammatical role. The accusative, genitive, and locative cases are the most frequently used.
Slovak uses the Latin alphabet with diacritics: á, ä, č, ď, é, í, ĺ, ľ, ň, ó, ô, ŕ, š, ť, ú, ý, ž. The hacek (ˇ) and acute accent (´) are the most common marks.
Slovak word order is flexible because case endings mark grammatical roles. SVO is default but emphasis can shift words around.
About the Slovak language
Slovak is a West Slavic language spoken by about 5.5 million people in Slovakia and diaspora communities. It is closely related to Czech, and the two languages were part of a single state (Czechoslovakia) until the peaceful separation in 1993.
Slovakia joined the EU in 2004 and the Eurozone in 2009. The country has a strong automotive industry (Volkswagen, Kia, Peugeot all have factories there) and a growing IT sector centered in Bratislava.
