Tips for English to Thai translation

Thai is a tonal language with five tones: mid, low, falling, high, and rising. The same syllable pronounced with different tones means completely different things. Mai can mean new, silk, burn, wood, or be a question particle depending on the tone. The audio buttons on this page are essential for hearing these distinctions.

Thai script does not use spaces between words. Sentences flow continuously, and readers identify word boundaries from context. This is similar to Lao, Chinese, and Japanese. The translator handles word segmentation automatically, but unusual word combinations may occasionally be split incorrectly.

Thai has a complex pronoun system that encodes gender, age, social status, and formality. Phom (I, male), dichan (I, female formal), chan (I, female casual). The translator uses context to select appropriate pronouns in the English output.

Thai has absorbed vocabulary from Pali, Sanskrit, Khmer, Chinese, and English. English loanwords are common in modern Thai: คอมพิวเตอร์ (computer), แท็กซี่ (taxi), โรงแรม (hotel). These translate back to English origins easily.

About the Thai language

Thai belongs to the Kra-Dai language family and is closely related to Lao. The Thai script was created in 1283 by King Ramkhamhaeng, adapted from Khmer script which itself derived from Indian Brahmi. Thai has 44 consonants, 15 vowel symbols that combine into over 28 vowel forms, and 4 tone marks.

Thailand is the only Southeast Asian country that was never colonized by a European power. This independence preserved Thai language and culture in ways that neighboring countries experienced differently. Today, Thailand is a major tourist destination (nearly 40 million visitors per year pre-pandemic), a manufacturing hub, and an increasingly important player in the ASEAN economic community. Thai cuisine has become one of the most popular in the world.
