Tips for English to Swedish translation

Swedish has two grammatical genders (common and neuter) with articles en and ett. Like Danish and Norwegian, the definite article attaches to the end of the noun: hus (house) becomes huset (the house), bil (car) becomes bilen (the car).

Swedish, Norwegian, and Danish form a Scandinavian dialect continuum. Written Swedish and Norwegian are quite similar, and speakers of all three languages can usually understand each other with some effort. This mutual intelligibility means a Swedish translation can often serve as a starting point for Scandinavian communication.

The Swedish letters å, ä, and ö are the last three letters of the alphabet, not modified versions of a, a, and o. They represent distinct vowel sounds essential for correct spelling and meaning. Far (father) and fär (sheep) are completely different words.

Swedish word order follows the V2 rule: the verb must be the second element in main clauses. Igår gick jag till skolan (Yesterday went I to school). After a fronted adverb, the subject and verb swap positions. This is automatic in Swedish but requires rearrangement when translating to English.

About the Swedish language

Swedish is a North Germanic language closely related to Norwegian and Danish. It is the most widely spoken Scandinavian language by number of native speakers. Swedish has been the dominant language of Sweden since the Middle Ages and was historically also the language of administration in Finland (which was part of Sweden until 1809).

Sweden consistently ranks among the top countries for innovation, quality of life, and English proficiency. Despite widespread English skills among Swedes, Swedish remains the language of government, education, media, and daily life. Swedish culture has had global impact through music (ABBA, Roxette, Avicii), literature (Stieg Larsson, Astrid Lindgren), film (Ingmar Bergman), and design (IKEA, H&M).
