Tips for English to Bulgarian translation
Bulgarian is unique among Slavic languages for having lost the grammatical case system almost entirely (like Macedonian). Nouns do not change endings for nominative, accusative, or dative. This makes Bulgarian grammar simpler than Russian, Polish, or Czech.
Bulgarian uses the definite article as a suffix, like Macedonian, Romanian, and the Scandinavian languages. Къща (house) becomes къщата (the house). This is unique among Slavic languages.
Bulgarian Cyrillic has 30 letters. Some look identical to Russian letters but may represent different sounds. The Bulgarian щ is “sht” (not “shch” as in Russian).
Bulgarian verbs do not use infinitives. Instead, the particle да + conjugated verb is used: Искам да ям (I want to eat = I want that I eat).
About the Bulgarian language
Bulgarian is a South Slavic language spoken by about 7 million people in Bulgaria. It was the first Slavic language to be written (in the Glagolitic and then Cyrillic script) by the followers of Saints Cyril and Methodius in the 9th century.
Bulgaria is an EU member with a growing tech sector and a popular tourist destination known for its Black Sea coast, ski resorts, and ancient Thracian heritage. Bulgarian rose oil production accounts for about 85% of the world supply.
